Warrants were used to pay soldiers who served in the Rev. War. The Kentucky warrants were for those that served in the Virginia Continental Line. He was apparently dead before he used the warrant so his son James gain the use as his fathers heir. Warrants could be sold and this one was assigned to a John Smith. Do you know what year John died? Did he or James ever spend any time in Kentucky? What unit did John serve in during the war?

thanks for your help
