The book, Strathendrick and its Inhabitants from Early Times, by J Guthrie Smith published in 1896, details this branch of the Buchanan clan. According to the book John Buchanan, a successor of Walter Buchanan and Isabel Stuart, married in 1653 and 1667. He had two daughters but no sons. He died before 6th September 1681 with no male successors so was the last Laird of Buchanan. His lands were purchased from his creditors by James, third Marquis of Montrose and, since the time of the 4th Marquis, and first Duke, Buchanan Castle became the principle seat of the Montrose family.

The book also covers the time between Walter and John. I am researching my branch of the Buchanan clan which stems from the Buchanans of Glennny. Perhaps you can find a copy of the book in a library.

Ian
