Hello - I have only recently been linked to the internet so was amazed to find this reference to Dr Bryden so I would like to add my two pennorth for what it`s worth!
My father, Ronald Hugh Bennett was born in Saharanpore, India on 8/8/1925- I can only just remember my grandparentsFrederick Charles Bennett and not sure of my grandmother`s name. Anyway, my father came to live in England following the partition in 1947, along with my grandparents and the rest of the family. He used to tell the story of an ancestor of his, a Dr Bryden who was the sole survivor of one of the battles fought during either the First or Second Afghan War. He said that Dr Bryden left the fort at Jellallabad on a mule as all the horses had been taken by the soldiers, therefore arriving much later at the scene of the battle. He was left with only the hilt of his sword.Apparently he was not decorated for his bravery - he was in fact a civilian doctor attached to the fort.
