I too have been tracing this family, and have a different solution than was previously posted. I believe Martha Bruton was the wife of John C. Bruton. Their family is seen in the Newton Township, Taney, MO 1860 census, and the Crooked Creek, Carroll County 1850 census. Their daughter Mary Jane is my great-grandmother. Their daughter Eliza Ann, who married James Thompson is shown on the following page of the 1880 Marshall, Platte County Census. Family stories say that John C. was killed in the Civil War, but I have yet to confirm it.
