Iím pleased to announce that a group of Bruton/Brewton researchers have initiated a DNA study with Family Tree DNA, Inc., in Houston, TX. This is the study that Steve Brooks cited in his December 2004 posting.
Our study homepage is located at:
The homepage includes a summary of our study objectives, a link to a more detailed webpage, and a form to use to order a test kit to participate in the study.
There are different kinds of DNA tests, we are doing a Y-test, which is the unique chromosome that passes from father to son. There is a 12-marker, 25-marker, and 37-marker test.
We are asking test participants to take the 25-marker test (Y-DNA25), as the more markers tested, the more accurate the match. The 12-marker is not that helpful for folks with Western European backgrounds, as Western Europe is fairly homogeneous, so there are lots of matches when only testing 12 markers.
The downside of the 25-marker test is that itís more expensive. The cost is $169 per test kit, plus shipping. I would estimate that the total cost per test kit is $175.
I recommend taking some time to read over the webpage. We have tried to anticipate questions; there are also very useful links on the companyís webpage that explain things in detail.
While our research efforts have focused on Brutons/Brewtons in the southeastern United States, we welcome the participation of other Bruton/Brewtons whose families lived in other parts of the United States and around the world.
We know that there was a significant concentration of Brutons in the county of Gloucester in England in the 1600s and 1700s. There are also Bruton families in Ireland. To determine if the family legends about the Brutons being French Huguenots is true, it would also be ideal to locate Brutons in France and in other countries where the Huguenots fled, such as the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Germany.
We hope that weíve designed the study to make it easy and understandable. Please let me know if you have questions, concerns, and suggestions. We welcome your participation!
