this same Isaac settled near High Hills in 1740 land adjoining Peter Porcher…(on/near Santee River)… he established St. Mark’s. Will in 1770 names wife Mary, sons Daniel, David, Isaac, Josiah, Mathew, Moses and Joshua, and daughters Mary Mellett and Susannah” There are three Brunston settlements between old Catawba and south fork of Black River in map of 1770.
Francis Varnod and enclosed by a letter dated 1-21-1725 to his Anglican employers in England.
Rev. Varnod was the Anglican minister/missionary in St. George Parish at that time. He made this census when he misunderstood directions just to count the inhabitants. Each head of household is followed by six numbers
and perhaps the letter D. The D was used for all dissenters, or individuals not attending the Anglican church. They were Quaker, Baptist, Congregationalist, or other. The first three numbers represent the white
(his word) people in the home by men, women, and children. The last three numbers are for slaves by men, women, and children. The last five heads of household in this list are titled Free Negros and Indians, and are called
free rather than white. Abbreviations were often used and I did not try to correct spelling.
