Hi, Christie:

So nice to h ear to back from you! There is something particularly special about hearing from distant relatives, since especially as far-flung as we are all getting, the possibilities of this sort of discovery and exchange never existed before the Internet. I talked with my father, Hunter Marion Brumfield Sr, earlier this morning and he was intrigued (claiming, again, he had never really paid attention before) about the names and locations I was able to tell him about. "Wasn't there something about some Kelly girls?" was among his several responses, and then we got into another discussion about that link, then switched to the McClintocks on my grandmother's side, and that resulted in a great conversation that went well past the usual, "Well, the weather's nice here, too" variety. One thing you can say is that despite any differences you might have with parents or offspring you always have THAT in common and it definitely gives you a warm feeling.

Have you read the Jamestown history recently? Please do. (I can give you some links, if you need, especially one for a PDF book penned in 1906, who discusses the engagements with the Indians in unvarnished detail. Definitely not "PC", but captivating, especially when he mentions a Brumfield in passing.)

That's great that you could go to Hong Kong. We have a trip planned next month to Beijing. I have been to Hong Kong and southern China, but this will be the first time deeper into the mainland. We'll see the Great Wall, which is something I have always wanted to do.

Interesting that your husband worked for Alps & Nippon Chemicon... I guess this is one of the Alps companies, and one of our publishing clients is an Alps spinoff -- Alpine Electronics, which makes car stereos and GPS systems. If he should come to Tokyo, please tell him I'd enjoy meeting him.

I also read that about Albert Brumfield's comments. This creates an element of confusion, doesn't it? It would be nice to have that resolved. My address is ftf@gol.com (Hunter Brumfield). It is good to have people who pull back the reins a bit, so that we don't eventually find ourselves related to Alexander the Great, or someone... and I have (without being an expert) basically given up on the Brumfield Boye connection. Even if we do go up through Moses, there is a two-generation (or so) break with "Boye", and if Cheryl's web tree is right, it shows that our direct forebear, "Jake", came from England, and this was well after the Jamestown boat with Brumfield Boye. But also earlier on this geneology chat forum, someone lays out very well and interestingly the possibilities, including relatives who decided to go see what crazy Uncle xxxx was up to in Jamestown, the same way my son in St. Louis might like to go visit his Uncle Bob in Jacksonville, then decide to stay. The main difference being weeks in a small sailing ship, hunger, illness, bears, and Indians. But if the times were tough, so definitely were the people back then. And it turned out to be well worth it, apparently, and fortunately, for US!

Please stay in touch, Christie. And Glenn, if you see this, thanks again for your message, completing this link between three distant (and distant) cousins...

Best wishes,

Hunter Marion (& Eiko) Brumfield Jr.
Tokyo
