William's father was most likely Obediah Broomfield who left Jessamine Co, Ky about 1830 and is found in Sangamon Co, Il that same year. Obediah's second wife's name is said to be Margaret and was the mother of all his children except James O. Obediah's children appear to be James O, Moses, Mary Ann, O(bediah?), John, Andrew J H, Sarah, William and Elizabeth S. Moses is the only one specifically identified as Obediah's child, but the connection of all these individuals to Sangamon Co and nearby areas tends to support their relationship. Based on comparison of census records for Obediah, the ages and sex of these individuals conform to the configuration of his family. Obediah and his wife both apparently died by 1839, when William is listed in records in DeWitt Co as an orphan.
