Royal Lineage of Robert The Bruce
Robert Bruce, 4th Baron of Annandale married Isobel of Huntingdon, younger sister of Margaret. They were the great grand children of David I of Scotland. Alexander II, wife Mary de Coucy, was also the great grandson of David I. His son Alexander III,was predeceased by all his 3 children.He reigned between 1249-1286.Alexander III had arranged and received approval to name Margaret, 'Maid of Norway',his grand daughter, and last surviving member of the ancient House of Canmore, heir to the Scottish throne at a council in Scone during 1284. Margaret the "Maid of Norway", Alexander's only heir dies in 1290 off the Orkneys on her way to England.
Scottish crown became opened to a number of claimants. The principal contestants were Bruce, Balliol and Comyn. Balliol claimed through his grand mother Margaret, older sister of Isobel. Robert, 5th Lord of Annandale, grand father of Robert The Bruce, claimed through his mother, Isobel, the younger sister of Margaret. The winner was John Balliol.
