I have information regarding Almon C. Brownson, my great-great grandfather, 1819-1912. Their son Frederick Eugene Brownson, my great grandfather, was 19 when the family moved from Windsor, NY to Dakota Territory in 1864 as part of the first organization to emigrate there. (I have some information about that trip from a few sources.) F. Eugene returned to Windsor in 1869 to marry Clara Knowlton and then brought her back to Dakota with him. My grandmother Fawnie Brownson Hvistendahl was one of their children. The Brownsons lived near Vermillion, S.D. where my grandmother Fawnie met and married Oscar Hvistendahl, a Watkins product salesman. Oscar died in 1929, leaving Fawnie to raise her four sons by herself through the Depression. Only one of those sons remains, the eldest, Julian (Jay) Hvistendahl. My father Joyce K. (Jake)Hvistendahl died in June of 2002. Almon Brownson's parents were Daniel Brownson (born about 1776 in Ct.) and Rhoda Holcomb Brownson, born about 1778 in Ct. Daniel was a farmer, who died 2/15/1859 in Windsor, NY and his wife Rhoda died 5/5 or 5/7, 1854 in Windsor. Both are buried in Lester Cemetery near Windsor. That is as far back as I have traced this Brownson family, although there was a note found about a Richard Brownson who came from England (Essex Cty?) to Newtown or Newton, Mass, now called Cambridge in 1633. The note which was passed down through the family said that in 1636 or 1638 he moved with the religious leader Rev. Thomas Hooker to Hartford, Ct. But I have found references to a John (not Richard) Brownson who moved with Hooker, so I am not sure what to make of that. I have a copy of a picture taken of Almon C. Brownson and Hannah Judd Brownson, taken by S.J. Morrow, Yankton, Dakota Territory, date unknown. I also have a copy of the wedding picture of Frederick Eugene Brownson and Clara Knowlton (Sept. 11, 1869) taken by Hickcox, #7 Court Street, Binghamton, NY. I also have an undated photo of four generations of Brownsons: F.Eugene Brownson and his father Almon Brownson and F. Eugene's son Webb Brownson with his son Earl "Brownie" Brownson, among other family photos. For further info, I can be reached via my e-mail address tensluv@aol.com. Best wishes to all Brownsons!
