Alexander Brownlow 1814-1883 Tenn.

Alexander Brownlow (1814-1883) was the son of Joseph Brownlow and Catharine Gannaway. He was born in Wytheville, Virginia as one of five children and was orphaned at an early age. All the children, the most famous being, William G. Brownlow, were sent to live with relatives in various places. Somewhere around 1840, Alexander married and this union produced 4 children..James A. Brownlow (1841), Jacob N. Brownlow (1842), Nancy Ann Brownlow (1845) and Sarah Brownlow (1847). I am assuming that wife #1 died after the birth of their last child, Sarah, because there is a record of his marriage to Nancy Walters in August of 1847. They go on to have more children and when she dies he marries again to a Mary Jones and then he dies in 1883 in Johnson City, Tn.
What I want to know is...Who was wife #1? She was our Great great grandmother and we don't have a clue as to who she was. Speculation in the family is that she was Cherokee or Creek and that is why there is no record. Any help would be appreciated since she is my 'brick wall' and I would like to be able to quit looking for her.
Thanks,
Pam
