Thank you Jason for your clarification of the two contemporary James Brownlows in NC. My research has come to the same conclusions.
James Brownlow, only son of John and Sarah Council of Cumberland Co. NC apears to hve been born about 1767 from the 1787 discharge date of his guardianship at age 21. He then sells land in the Fayetteville area of Cumberland Co. starting in 1787. He first appears in the records of Halifax Co. NC on 22 Jul.1789 as grantor of 205 acres (Halifax D.B. 17 p.126). He is listed in the 1790 U.S. Census in Halifax as - 0-0-2-1-1 female servant, 17 slaves. An Halifax deed dated 15 Aug. 1801 (DB 18,807) as grantor of 1553 acres in Davidson Co. TN to Daniel Mason was evidently Revoltionry War bounty land granted to his father. This deed styles him as "James Brownlow and wife Sarah, of New Hanover County" NC. He married a wealthy widow Mrs. Sarah Campbell of Wilmington NC, a wedding announcement appears in the Wilmington Gazette on 24 Mar.1801. On 23 Jun.1809 "William A.E. Brownlow son of James Brownlow died at the Havannah" from an article in the Wilmington Gazette. On 28 Jun.1814 "James Brownlow aged 47 died at his plantation on the Sound" from an article in the Wilmington Gazette. On 1 Mar.1838 "James P. Brownlow of Wilmington aged 34 died, burial at St. James Episcopal." from the Wilmington Advertiser.
This imformation does not answer all the questions surronding this James Brownlow. He seems to have married in Halifax Co. NC prior to 1790. He sells a substantial amount of land in Halifax, but where it came from is not known, possibly from a wealthy wife?. He may be the father of Tippoo Sahib Brownlow born circa 1794 in NC (from data in 1850, 1860 census) who appears in Halifax Co. records from 1812 till his death in 1870.
