Which James Brownlow moved to Tennessee?

I will attempt to shed some light on just exactly which James moved to Tennessee from Chatham County, North Carolina, in the early 1800's. This is complicated do to the fact that the Census taker seems to have missed several of the early Brownlows.

In 1800 there were only 2 known James Brownlow’s in North Carolina. One was the son of John (James) Brownlow the other was the son of William (James) Brownlow. I will call then James (1) and James (2) respectively.

Here is what is known:

~ James (1) Brownlow had to have been born prior to April 1774. This is substantiated by the fact that in that month Arthur Council was granted guardianship of James (1) Brownlow. This would also mean that he had to have been born after April 1753 as he was not of age in 1774. In 1777 Arthur Council died and James Council was made guardian of James (1) Brownlow in July of that year. This would give him a birth date of between July 1756 and April 1774. His father’s birth year is estimated to be about 1730 so it seems likely that James (1) Brownlow would have been born nearer to 1756 than 1774.

~ James (2) Brownlow was born about 1765 as he was 2 years old when his parents immigrated to Charles Town, South Carolina, in 1767.

~ James Brownlow “Of Chatham County” purchased land in Chatham County, North Carolina, on January 29, 1798.

~ James Brownlow “Of Chatham County” purchased land in Chatham County, North Carolina, on March 29, 1798.

~ The 1800 Census for Chatham County, North Carolina, has the follwing entry:
James Brownlow -2010020100
1 male 1790-1800
1 male 1790-1800
1 male 1774-1784
1 female 1790-1800
1 female 1790-1800
1 female 1774-1784

~ On September 15, 1800, James (William) Brownlow “Son of William Brownlow dec’d ... of Chatham County” sold his interest in the estate of Jane Patterson, his aunt.

~On February 13, 1801, Thomas Ragland, Sheriff of Chatham County, North Carolina, seized the interest on the estate of Jane Patterson that was due to James Brownlow “Of Chatham County” to pay a debt of 6 pounds, 8 shillings , 10 pence.

~ February 11, 1802, James Brownlow “Of Chatham County” bought land in Chatham County, North Carolina.

~According to James McCallum‘s History of Giles County, Tennessee, which was written in 1876: “James Brownlow and others, settled a little south of John Fry in 1809"

~According to Godspeed’s History of Giles County, Tennessee, written in 1886: “James Brownlow settled on the waters of Lynn Creek between 1808 and 1810"

~ On January 28, 1814, a James Brownlow died in Halifax County, North Carolina.

~ The 1820 (First extant) Census for Giles County has a widow, Mary Brownlow with the following household:
1 male 1810-1820
1 male 1802-1804
1 male 1794-1804
1 male 1794-1804
1 female 1810-1820
1 female 1804-1810
1 female 1804-1810
1 female bef. 1775

~The 1830 Census for Giles County, Tennessee, has Mary Brownlow with the following household:

1 male 1815-1820
1 female 1815-1820
1 female 1770-1780

My Conclusion: Having gone over the preceding information many time I am now of the opinion that the James Brownlow who moved to Giles County, Tennessee in 1809 was the son of William and Jane Brownlow. I believe that he was born in 1767 in Ireland and died in Giles County, Tennessee, between 1809 and 1820. I believe that he was married, in Chatham County, North Carolina, to a woman named Mary. I believe they were married about 1790. I am unsure of what became of James Brownlow son of John Brownlow, but it seems likely that he moved to Halifax County, North Carolina, before 1790 and died there in 1814. However, it is also possible that this James was in fact the brother of William and John Brownlow.

I hope this helps clear up some of the missinformation,
Jason Lee Edwards
