Hi Naseemah - how you doin? I tried to find some info for you on Henry and think I found the right family. Henry is shown as Black though, not White and not Irish. What made you think he was either? Also he is shown as born NC and parents born NC too. He is the only Henry Higgs with right children that I could find. Here is the info. Let me know if you think it is the right family. 1900 LITTLETON, HALIFAX, NC HIGGS Henry, age 47, black, born April 1853, farmer, married 20 years Ellen, wife age 34, black, born April 1866, married 20 years, 11 children born 10 living James, son, black, age 18, born April 1882, farm laborer Lindsey, son, black, age 14, born July 1884, farm laborer Joseph, son, black, age 13, born April 1887, farm laborer Annie, daughter, black, age 11, born May, 1889, farm laborer Ivy, daughter black,, age 8, born June 1891 Martha, daughter, black, age 5, born No. 1894 Lizzie, daughter, black, age 4, born May 1896 Caroline, daughter, black, age 3 born June 1897 Aloga, son age 2, black, born Feb. 1898 Henry, son, black, age 11/12, born July, 1899 ** all are shown born NC with both parents born NC The only Henry Higgs I could find in 1880 was 1880 BUTTERWOOD, HALIFAX, NC HIGGS Henry, age 20, mulatto, servant, farm labor, born NC parents both born NC (he is living with a Patterson family) If this is him the year of birth would be 1860 - and it is shown as 1853 in 1900 so not sure if this is right fellow or not or possibly someone else gave the information and got it wrong?? As he was married about 1880 ( from 1900 census info) I looked for any Ellens in the same area and found two. Ellen Wilkins, mulatto and Ellen Ballard, black - both in Butterwood, both born 1866. I couldn't find a marriage for either of these Ellens. I tried to find a marriage for Henry and Ellen to find her maiden name but haven't had any luck yet. 1910 LITTLETON, HALIFAX, NC _ Butterwood Road HIGGS Lizzie, age 26, black, widow, farm labor, working out, 3 children born, 3 living Joe, age 23, step-son, mulatto, painter, house, and farmer Martha, age 14, step-daughter, mulatto, servant, private family Lizzie, age 13, step-daughter,mulatto, servant, private family Caroline, age 11, step-daughter,mulatto Irene, age 7, step-daughter, mulatto George, age 5, son, black Otis, age 4, son, black ** all are shown born NC with both parents born NC ** this looks like Henry remarried after Ellen died ** I also assume if Joe looked after his siblings then Lizzie likely did not stay with them - see 1920 census below. Also she is shown as having 3 children living so I figured that Irene is her daughter, not step-daughter as shown. I found Lizzie and kids in 1920 and confirmed this. see below ***The names in 1910 match with some of the children in 1900- Joe, Martha, Lizzie, Caroline ** where were Alogo and Henry though - they would only be about 10/11 and 12/13 so you would think they would be with them unless they had died or were working out somewhere. 1920 BUTTERWOOD, HALIFAX, NC HARRIS Charles, age 44, farmer, black, Lizzie, wife, age 39, laborer, black James, boarder, age 40, farmer, black in same household HIGGS George, step-son, age 16, laborer, black Otis, step-son, age 13, laborer, black COLEY Arane, step-daughter, age 19, married, laborer, black John Henry, 7/12, grandchild, black ** all shown born NC both parents born NC ** it does not show how long Lizzie and Charles were married but she obviously did remarry and leave the Higgs children alone with Joe to look after. 1920 LITTLETON, HALIFAX, NC - BUTTER WOOD STREET HIGGS Joe, age 35, mulatto, painter and farmer, Hattie, wife, age 27, mulatto, washwoman, private family Leon, son age 7,mulatto, laborer, farm Bertha, daughter, mulatto Hattie, age 2, daughter, mulatto ** all born NC with both parents born NC ** Leon is so young to be working the farm but then I remember my father-in-law telling me that when he was a young boy he would be taken out of school to help on the farm. I haven't found them in 1930 census yet. I did find a death record for Hattie. Hattie Higgs, widow, black, died Nov. 1, 1969, Tarboro, Edgecombe, NC age 77 I didn't find an entry for Joe. I did find a SSDI for him with birth as April 10, 1885 death April 1869 . I wonder if the year of birth is wrong as in 1900 is is shown as 1887,?? Again I suppose it all depends on who gave the info when he died and also in 1900 census - one must be wrong. You mentioned Henry being in Scotland Neck which I found out is part of Caledonia. How did you know he had lived there? There are quite a few Higg families there in earlier years but no Henry. I wonder if he had another name and was using his middle name perhaps?? Do you have anything more on him at all that might help me find him in earlier census records.?? Also I haven't found Joe in 1930 census but both he and Hattie were alive then so should be there. I tried both Halifax and Edgecombe Counties - then tried using just their first names and all counties, nothing. Do you know if they could have used another first name? Do you know Joe's middle name? all for now, Carolyn L. Notify Administrator about this message?
