I am a descendant of John Browning and Jane Hawkins--I did not know she was "Mary Jane." I am descended through James Madison I and Anastacia Coleman's son James Madison and his second wife Mary Jane (Mollie) Smith. There's lots of information available on the Brownings after they arrived in AL, but I have had great difficulty finding proven connections earlier. I know John Browning and son James Madison bought land in Randolph Co, AL early--probably shortly after Indians were removed and land was made available (I'm part Indian, too, and always have mixed feelings here). I found John in the census in Charleston, SC in 1830, 1840, and then in Henry Co, GA, in 1850. It seems to me he was just traveling west as so many people were during that time.--I also had no idea any of the family were buried in Cherokee Co, AL. Could you tell me what cemetery? I will be glad to share with you any information you want on the AL Brownings and also my tentative findings about John's parents. Please email me if you're interested.
