Sandy,
I do not know if this is your Ben or not, but as he was only one of right age I could find in Alabama 1860 I thought I would send it to you.
1860 Township 3 Range 6 East, Jackson Co. AL
PROCTOR
Cynthia 59, farmer born NC
Reuben 20 farm labor, born AL
William 17 farm labor, born AL
Thomas 15, farm labor, born AL
in same house
BROWNING
Elizabeth 28, born AL
Caroline 11, born AL
Jane 8, born AL
Benjamin 5, born AL
--------------------------------------
It looks like Elizabeth was possibly a Proctor although it does not show a relationship. I am assuming Cynthia to be her mother, but may be wrong.
I tried to find Elizabeth and daughter Caroline in 1850 so I could find the father's name but no luck. I don't know where they are. I also could not find them in 1870. I tried both AL and TX as I thought they might have gone on to TX by then.
I hope this is your family and helps you out a bit.
Carolyn
