Sarah Sword married Jacob Syck ca 1809 in Russell Co., Va. I am unaware of any divorce record involving Sarah and a Browning. In the late 1980's, I was sent a newspaper clipping about theFrank Browning marriage story and the raising of the four boys as Swords. At that time, I felt the story was concocted and I have found no reason to change my mind.
I agree that Francis Browning, son of Enos Browning and Jane Trim, is an unlikely candidate. It strikes me that a man of means might support two families but a young man such as the above Francis Browning, b Dec 1780 d Dec 1858, would not be such a person. Since John Sword was b 24 May 1797, Francis would likely be 15 at the time of conception. That, in itself, is not meaningful since cohabitation of a 15 year old male with a 24 year old female is not be out of the realm of possibility. It is the support that Sarah would have to receive by a 16 year old that is bothersome. If he was not supporting her with son John, then I find it hard to believe he would be the father of Henry, Francis, and L.B. If he was supporting Sarah and the boys, how was he supporting Tabitha Vance and her children?
If a married Browning was the father of Sarah Sword's four boys, I feel he would be old enough to have substantial assets for the support of two families. There were two such Brownings in Russell Co, Va from 1796 to 1809.
