Hi Nancy.Thank you for posting the obituary of Walter J. Brownell. It answered a couple of questions that I had about him and his relationship to his wife Evelyn, who was also a Brownell, and who was his fifth cousin, with their common ancestors being Revolutionary War soldier Elijah Brownell and his wife Sarah Fish, who are also my ancestors. Are you related in any way to these families?
Byron Herrington's 1970 work on the Ancestors and Descendants of Elijah Brownell lists Walter without dates under the family of his parents, but only lists six of their fourteen children. The E.E. Brownell collection of the 1930's lists all fourteen children born between 1922 and 1934 to Earl C. Brownell and Nellie Rose Denaro, but calls Walter Walton J.Walter's wife Evelyn Brownell was the daughter of Otis W. Brownell and Elma R. Darling and was born in Greenwich, Washington Co., New York. The Byron Herrington work calls her husband Walter H. Brownell, unrelated, a carpenter in Ballston Spa, with children James d. in accident, Donna, Walter, and David born between 1947 and 1955.The other children mentioned in the obituary must have been born after 1955.
I am curious to know more about Walter's other siblings.Apparently his brother Hiram died in April of 2001 in Mancheter Center, Bennington County, Vermont. The obituary makes no mention of sisters Marjorie, Dorothy, Rose, Phyllis, or Carmen.Do you know of anyone who can supply more details on this family. There must be numerous descendants. My ancestors left the Washington County, New York area in 1850 and finally ended up in California, where I live, so it is not easy for me to contact these families personally to make updates to my genealogical collection.Any help would be appreciated.Best regards.Don Badger, Santa Rosa, CA
