Brownes, 1300ss, Stamford, England

I've traced "my" Brownes back to John Browne, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, c.1330. The first direct descendant to immigrate to the colonies was John Browne (c. 1601-1636) who traveled to Plymouth colony along with his wife Dorothy (Kent) and their children, aboard the ship "Lyon" in 1632. Their son John married Ester(Hester)Makepeace and eventually returned to England, but his son, Joseph Brown settled in Falmouth and Lexington Mass. My branch moved to what was to become Maine in the mid-1700s. Is anyone else researching these Brown(e)s? Does anyone know why the family would drop the "e" when they came to the colonies?
