Hi Marshall,
There were more than just two "Robert Browns" in the area of old Franklin Co. Ga. between 1790 and 1820.
1. Robert Brown b. abt. 1740 (?) m. abt. 1771 to Rachel Brown d.o. of Thomas Allred & Elizabeth
Resided in Randolph Co. NC from at least 1768 to 1791. Removed to Franklin Co. Georgia between 1791 and 1801 (which became Habersham then Banks Co. Georgia) in what was then called Wofford's Settlement and owned 575 ac. on Middle Creek of Broad River had sons James, John, William, Isaac and possibly a Robert Jr. The Wofford's, Hollingsworth's, Hartgraves, Weatherspoons and Brown's were near neighbors. By 1823, none of these Brown's were living in Franklin/Habersham Co. Ga. This is my line, and though we have been tested as haplogroup Q1a3 (western european ancestry) we are not listed on the dna index for Brown Genealogy Society. And according to the lab, we are Q1a3 originating in north western Europe and we are "not American Indian" which would be "Q1a3a" (in most cases, not all, some are haplogroup C3).
Note: Wofford's Settlement contained another Brown family that of Augustine Brown and sons of which he had several, none being a Robert. I haven't found any connection but believe this Augustine Brown who may have come out of Sunnyside Virginia, i.e. southern Virginia, where there are references in Franklin Co. Virginia and Brunswick Co. Virginia.
2. Robert Brown who married Catherine and resided at his death (bef. 1801) in Elbert County Georgia, (see Elbert Co. Court/Probate records) did own land in Franklin Co. Georgia prior to 1801. He also had a son Robert Brown, Jr. and several other children who continued to reside in Elbert Co. Ga. for some time after 1810. Robert Brown was the son of Abraham Brown and his mother was a Kirklund of Augusta Co. Virginia and is well documented. I find no evidence that they actually lived in Franklin Co. Ga. though there is land ownership for them in early Franklin Co. Ga. land records.
3. Robert Brown who was married to one of James Vann's sisters (Vann's were part Cherokee).Brown was a Scot's trader licensed to trade in the Cherokee nation earlier than 1790. No evidence that I have seen that he had any children residing within Franklin Co. Georgia, though it is possible that the family resided there prior to 1790. If they did reside within Georgia it is more likely that they resided within the interior of the Cherokee Nation rather than in Franklin Co. However, I have seen evidence of other Trader/Cherokee families residing in old Pendleton District, S.C. and outside the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation prior to 1800 so it is possible. It is my opinion that they were for the most part resident of the portion of Cherokee Nation that is now Tennessee or upper interior Georgia.
4. Robert Brown (brother of Pollard Brown) fought in the Rev. War along with his brother out of Culpeper County Va. (ref. to them both may be found in the Early Culpeper County Virginia wills). Pollard Brown and Robert Brown first settled in Pendleton Dist. S.C. then Robert Brown removed to Franklin Co. Ga. sometime after 1812. Robert Brown, had sons Hugh, Robert Jr. (was a Justice of the Peace of Habersham and of I believe Rabun Co. Ga. not to be confused with Robert R. Brown #6 below), James and William (possibly others). These Browns lived and and died in Franklin Co. and /or Rabun Co. Ga. This line lived near and overlapped those Brown's found in reference 1. which causes much confusion.
5. Robert Brown (per John haplogroup R1b1a2) brother of Hukey Brown, Steven Brown and Abraham Brown of Flat Creek. A few references will be found in early Franklin Co Ga. records.I agree with John Brown that they probably resided primarily in what became Jackson County Ga. Records on this line are scarce and I believe they may have left Georgia before 1820.
I have often wondered if this particular family is related to Israel Brown of Lunenburg Co. Va. Wills - Page 21 Brown, Israel 8-22-1757; 8-5-1760; Mentions: Wife: Anne Brown Sons: Isaac Brown, Jacob Brown, Robert Brown, Stevison Brown (often referred to as Steven in other records), Abraham Brown. Daughters: Lucy Crotle (Cuttilo), Sarah Brown, Jane Brown, Anne Brown, Amey Brown. Executors: Anne Brown (wife), Isaac Brown. Witnesses: Barnaby Noland, Thomas Trammell. (There are other wills involving this group there as well which indicate that grandsons may have had the same names as the sons named above. And my feeling is that if there is a connection, then the Franklin/Jackson Co. Ga. Browns would probably by grandsons not sons of Israel). These Brown's were related to som Mulatto families and wether they are themselves partially of Indian or Black ancestry is uncertain. They did own substantial land and were often mentioned in Lunenburg records.
6. Robert R. Brown was a Justice of the Peace and Judge and is not as far as can be determined related to any of these other families. He appears in court and land records into the middle 1800's. He had a brother Abner Brown who died in Mississippi.(This Brown rarely appeared in records without the middle initial R. in his name.)
By my count, there were at least seven (7)very likely more men named Robert Brown referenced in Early Franklin Co. Ga. records 1790 - 1820. Please note that does not include the Robert Brown's that resided across the river in nearby South Carolina, and there were some. After reviewing several posts over many years, I have found much confusion in the ranks of researchers myself included, who tend to lump all references to a "Robert Brown" into one person.
Thank you John for identifying your haplogroup and I wish you all, John, Carol, Daniel and Marshall good luck in your searches.
