Ann:

Do you know where in Bedford Co. Joseph resided? Was he in the vicinity of Goose Creek? Is he the same Joseph who in 1777 was conveyed a deed from Joseph Payne "on the east branches of Beaverdam Creek and the head branches of Stony For of Goose Creek, near Weaver and Pate?"

I have been looking at this family group for a long time, wondering if they are connected to my Daniel Brown who died in 1797, Bedford Co. Some of the items mentioned in your post suggest there might be a connection.

1) I am 99% certain that Daniel had a son named Shadrack, who in 1787 married Hannah Mitchell. She was the daughter of longtime neighbors near the Meadows of Goose Creek, John and Ann Tyler Mitchell. A researcher of the Mitchell line told me they came to Bedford with a large number of families from Charles Co., MD. Although she had no proof the Browns were part of this contingent, it was her feeling that their close proximity to the Mitchells suggested they too may have come from MD.

2) The name Jesse is closely connected to my Daniel's family. A Jesse Brown was surety for the 1800 marriage of Jimmy Cundiff and Lucy Brown. She was the daughter of Daniel Jr., who also appears to have a son named Jesse, who married Elizabeth Payne in 1801, daughter of Thomas Payne. The Jesse mentioned in the 1800 marriage record may have been an uncle or cousin to Daniel Jr.

3) Daniel Srs. eldest son was William. Family lore has it that William was a loyalist, and at odds over the Revolutionary War with his father. Whether or not this is the same William you mentioned as taking the oath of loyalty is anyone's guess, but that he took it on the same date as your Joseph makes it a noteworthy record.

I have long suspected that Daniel Sr. went to the Bedford area as part of a larger family group. Jesse is one candidate as a possible sibling or cousin; Joseph another.

Please contact me if you'd like to compare notes. Maybe we can figure this thing out.

Justin Sanders.
