Norm,

The Francis Brown "I" (died 1691/1692) family out of Essex Co., VA "spread far a wide" over the years (including SC, TN and KY....and, no doubt, beyond). One branch that left Essex in the early-1760s and moved to Lunenburg Co., VA (the part that soon after became Mecklenburg Co., VA) was NOT out of the Daniel Brown "II" who had married Elizabeth Coleman. Daniel Brown "II" was a son of Francis Brown "II" and a grandson of Francis Brown "I." The branch of this overall Brown family that moved to Lunenburg Co., VA, however, was headed by a Henry Brown "II" who was a son of Henry Brown "I" (and his wife Keziah Jones) and a grandson of Daniel Brown "I." Daniel Brown "I" was a son of Francis Brown "I," and Daniel Brown "I" was married to Jane Copeland. There was another Brown family that was already in the Lunenburg/Mecklenburg area, however, and it was headed by a Thomas Brown whose close friend was a man named Cluverius Coleman (and these two families intermarried). I note that Cluverius Coleman was from the same overall Coleman family as the earlier Elizabeth Coleman who had married the Daniel Brown "II" mentioned above.

I see several clues that make me believe that the above Thomas Brown in Lunenburg/Mecklenburg Co., VA was related to the family of Francis Brown "I" of Essex Co., VA. In addition, in 1708, Francis Brown "II" (a son of the above Francis Brown "I") wrote his will in Essex Co., VA, and an "unknown" Thomas Brown was the witness for that will. I strongly believe that this "mystery" Thomas Brown was a cousin or nephew (or other close relative) of Francis Brown "I," and I suspect that the Thomas Brown who was in Lunenburg/Mecklenburg Co., VA was out of that "mystery" branch of this overall Brown family.

It is possible that your Brown family is out of this Thomas Brown line in Lunenburg/Mecklenburg, or it is possible that your Brown line is out of one of the sons of Daniel Brown "II" and his wife Elizabeth Coleman (this couple left Essex and moved to Orange/Culpeper Co., VA....Daniel Brown "II" died about 1747 in that area of VA).

In any case, I would highly recommend that you join the Brown DNA testing project, as this will prove whether or not you are truly a member of this overall Brown family (shown as Group 10 on the Brown Society DNA testing website...http://brownsociety.org/browndna/dna-brown.htm). In the interim, I will bring your post to the attention of some of my fellow researchers, and I will let you know if we can help you with your search.
