One Irby Brown in the Dinwiddie Co./Petersburg, VA area was the son of Hezekiah Brown "II" and a Miss Irby. Irby Brown married Rebecca Bonner Eppes (a famous family in VA). Hezekiah Brown "II" was the son of an older Hezekiah Brown "I" who married a Sally Unknown, and he left Essex Co., VA and moved to Amelia Co., VA in the 1750s. This older Hezekiah Brown "I" was the son of a Francis Brown (born about 1700) and his wife Christiana Unknown. This Francis Brown also left Essex Co., VA, but he moved to Chesterfield Co., VA, where he died in the mid-1750s.
One theory is that the above "mystery" Francis Brown was a son of the "mystery" Thomas Brown who witnessed the will of yet another Francis Brown in Essex Co., VA in 1708/1709. The Francis Brown who died around 1709 in Essex (we call him Francis Brown "II") was married to an Elizabeth, and his father was yet another/third Francis Brown (Francis Brown "I"; he died 1691/1692 in Essex Co., VA) who was also married to an Elizabeth. We have not determined how/if the above "mystery" Thomas Brown and his LIKELY son "mystery" Francis Brown were related to the family of Francis Brown "I" and "II" (but this Thomas Brown was probably a cousin or nephew of Francis Brown "I").
We have one DNA donor who is definitely out of Irby Brown and Rebecca Bonner Eppes, and his DNA matches several other donors who APPEAR to be out of Francis Brown "I" (these donors are all in Group 10 on the Brown DNA website). We are hoping that more male Browns from these groups will join the DNA test so that we can verify, once and for all, if the family of Francis Brown "I" is TRULY "represented" by Group 10 (and hence, verify if the "mystery" Thomas and Francis Brown were or were not part of that same overall Brown family).
By the way, there was a Henry Brown who married a Susan Ligon in Spartanburg Co., SC around 1803. A male Brown donor from this family also matches Group 10. We are not sure, however, if this branch of the family is out of the above "Hezekiah Brown line" that moved to Amelia Co., VA (where a Ligon family lived) or if this branch of the family is out of a known direct-line descendant of Francis Brown "I," who was also named Henry Brown (born by 1710), and who moved to Lunenburg/Mecklenburg Co., VA by the early-1760s (where yet another branch of the Ligon family lived). We know that some decendants of the older Henry Brown in Lunenburg/Mecklenburg moved to Spartanburg Co., SC, but it seems that most believe that the Susan Ligon who married a later Henry Brown in SC around 1803 came out of Amelia Co., VA.
