Researching Brown family for brother-in-law. Grandfather: JOHN FRANKLIN BROWN, b. 1879, Clay Co, AL Grandmother: MARY JANE ELIZABETH VANN, b. 1884, Marshall Co Her last address was Hartselle, Morgan Co, AL Believe John Franklin Brown's father was: WILLIAM A. BROWN, b. 1853, AL; married MARY B.? They are listed in the 1880 Census Clay Co, AL: 1880 Alabama Census Clay County, Wesobulga W. A. Brown - age 27 - AL/SC/GA Mary B. Brown - wife - age 27 - AL/ -- / -- Mary J. E. Brown - dtr - age 8 - AL/AL/AL Baby D. Brown - dtr - age 6 - AL/AL/AL Emma D. Brown - dtr - age 4 - AL/AL/AL John F. Brown - age 1 - AL/AL/AL F. R. Brown - brother - age 20 - AL/SC/GA Believe William A. Brown's father to be: JAMES S. BROWN, b. abt. 1820 either North or South Carolina His wife's name was Mary Jane, b. in Georgia; I also believe his children may have been by two separate wives, both named Mary, since ages vary impossibly. James S. Brown is found in the 1870 census of Clay Co, AL, living at Blake's Ferry: 1870 Alabama Census Clay County, Blake's Ferry James S Brown - age 50 - farmer - SC or NC (hard to read) Mary J Brown - age 45 - GA Gracy A Brown - age 20 - GA Wm Brown - age 17 - AL Thos Brown - age 15 - AL Franklin Brown - age 13 - AL Eligah Brown - age 10 - AL John Brown - age 9 - AL Elisabeth Brown - age 7 - AL Mary M Brown - age 5 - AL Elisha Brown - age 1 - AL ----------------- I find him in Tallapoosa Co, AL, in 1880: 1880 Alabama Census Tallapoosa County, Daviston (Same children indicated by dotted line) Jas. S. Brown - age 59 Mary Brown - wife - age 35 John Brown - age 18 --------------- Elizabeth Brown - age 16 ------------- Mary Ann Brown - age 14 ------------ Romalis Brown - age 13 [possibly Elisha's middle name?] Robert Lee Brown - age 11 Elmina Brown - age 8 Lillia Brown - age 7 Montaina Brown - age 5 Henry Brown - age 3 Ollia Brown - age 1 ------------------------ There is no census of Clay County in 1860, since Clay was taken from Randolph and Talladega Counties in 1866. I cannot find James S. Brown in 1860 in either Alabama or Georgia, and nothing under wife Mary or his first four children, all born by 1860. I cannot find any further information on Franklin R. Brown, who was living with his brother William A. (W. A.), in 1880 Clay Co, AL. I cannot find William A. Brown anywhere in the 1900 census, or any of his children. I finally found JOHN FRANKLIN BROWN in Morgan Co, AL, in 1910. It is the same family because all the counties mentioned were where older family members said they had lived: 1910 Alabama Census Morgan County, Eva John F Brown - age 31 - farmer - married 4 yrs - AL/AL/AL Mary J Brown - age 25 - married 4 yrs - 3 children/3 living - AL/US/AL Rosella Brown - dtr - age 3 - AL/AL/AL Mertie N Brown - dtr - age 2 - AL/AL/AL Ossie C Brown - dtr - age 8/12 - AL/AL/AL Eveline Vann - mother in law - age 64 - AL/SC/SC Rozella/Rosella, the oldest daughter in this family, married Bethel C. Satterfield. They lived in Morgan County for many years. Mertie Novella, their second daughter, married a Smith. Ossie C. was another daughter, full name Ossie Claud. Don't know any more about her. Eveline Vann, of course, was Mary Jane Elizabeth Vann's mother. The Vann family (father William Jasper Vann) lived in Marshall County, AL The JOHN FRANKLIN BROWN family continued to live in the town of Eva in Morgan County at least until 1930. They are listed in both the 1920 and 1930 censuses of Morgan County. I would appreciate any information about these families if there is anyone else researching any of these named. Some of these Browns wound up in Cullman County in later years. Notify Administrator about this message?
