Brown/Trewhitt--1800--TN
Has any one determined who the Brown was that Elizabeth (Mumford) Trewhitt married? This question requires a bit of background.
According to an article published in June 24, 1934 issue of the
Chattanooga Times, Elizabeth Trewhitt married a James Brown. Her mother, said in the article to be Harriet Munford, of North
Carolina, had married a fellow of the same surname following the early
death of her first husband, James Trehitt, said to be the father of Jesse, Elizabeth, Levi and Sallie Trewhitt.
Byron and Barbara Sistler's abstraction of the 1850 Census for TN, lists a "John" Brown (65) and his wife, Elizabeth (60) living in Hamilton Co, TN.Living with them is Elizabeth Brown (77) and Jesse Mumford (70).
From the above bit from the census, it would appear that the article got the story partly right. It goofed up the first name of Elizabeth (Mumford) Trewhitt Brown and, apparently, the first name of the man, John Brown, whom Elizabeth Trewhitt married. But the rest of it seems to match the outline of the story given in the paper.
The copy of the article that I have was sent to me by Howard Brown of Charlottsville, VA in 1981.(Yes, it has been awhile since I worked on this stuff!)The original had belong to Howard's father, Robert Selvidge Brown, son of James W. Brown and grandson of James Brown and an unknown first wife.Robert S. Brown had underlined and circled the line of the story which read "Elizabeth [Trewhitt] married James Brown" and had written in the margin:"This was my Grand Mother Brown."
This can't be correct because James and his second wife were listed on the 1850 census, living in Morgan Co, TN.Since Elizabeth, his supposed wife is living in Hamilton Co with John Brown, it isn't likely that she was his first wife.Elizabeth is said to be 60 at the time of the census. With 19 years difference between the two, it is possible that rather than being his first wife, she might have been his mother.Could Elizabeth Trewhitt and her husband, John Brown have been the parents of James Brown and his probably brother, Fenton M. Brown of Morgan and Cumberland Co, TN?
Or, even more possible, could Robert Selvedge Brown have confused the mother and daughter?Did Elizabeth (Munford) Trewhitt marry the father of James and Fenton, as a second wife? Is John Brown, of Hamilton Co, a previously unrecognized brother of Fenton and James and was Elizabeth (Munford) Trewhitt Brown their step-mother?
The reason I ponder these questions is because of that note written by Robert Selvedge Brown. He may have just seen the name James Brown and noted the connection to Morgan Co of the Levi Trewhitt. However, it is also possible thathe recognized the name Trewhitt as having some connection to his personal family history but wasn't sure of what that connection was.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
