Hi Dorothy:
Some of my own Broughton family was born on Stinking Creek in Knox Co., KY.Looks like we're cousins.
I have a question for you:
Did your grandfather, Eli Henry Broughton, have any sisters that were just a year or two younger than him?Perhaps a sister named Sarah Elizabeth Broughton who married Anderson Keene in Knox Co., on January 3, 1855?
Well, anyway ...
I see that your mother, Laura Broughton Evans, was born in 1890. Her siblings - your aunts and uncles - include .....
W. Thomas Broughton - 1886
Frank Broughton - 1888
Margaret Broughton - 1895
Andrew Broughton - 1896
Millard F. Broughton - 1898
Nannie Broughton - 1899
Florence Broughton - 1903
Minton Broughton - 1905
Your grandfather, Eli Henry Broughton, was born in Knox Co. on the first of February, 1837.He was a farmer, trader, and also Justice of the Peace in Clay Co., KY.He married your grandmother on January 15, 1886 in Bell Co., KY, and died about 7 years after Vestina, in 1912.
Your grandfather was previously married to Eleanor Slusher (b. 1838 in Harlan Co., KY) in October 1859, and she died in 1885.Eli & Eleanor had these children .....
John Wesley Broughton - 1863
James Buchanan Broughton - 1864
Henry Elihu Broughton - 1867
Martha Broughton - 1869
Sarah Jane Broughton - 1871
Elizabeth Broughton - 1873
Alice Broughton - 1878
Your great-grandparents were John Broughton (b. 1806, son of William Broughton & Elizabeth Nicholson, in Buncombe Co., NC) and Sarah Payne (b. 1806, daughter of William Payne and Abigail Stewart; d. 1875 in Knox Co.) They were married on September 9, 1830 in Knox Co.; John was a farmer and trader; he died 1870 in Knox Co., KY.
I show that Eli's parents, grandparents and great-grandparents are buried behind "Friendship Baptist Church" in Hammond, Knox Co., KY.True? Is that church also known as "Missionary Baptist"?
In 1808, the Broughtons moved to KY from Buncombe Co., NC, along with the Woodwards and Davises. I show that, onMarch 28, 1808, Woodward Broughton purchased 150 acres in Clay Co., KY, though most of them moved to Knox Co., KY.
Your great-great grandfather, William Broughton, was born on October 4, 1784 in North Carolina; he married Elizabeth Nicholson (b. 1789) there on October 24, 1805; he died in Knox Co., KY on October 24, 1854, and Elizabeth died there about five years later, in 1860.
Your great-great-great grandfather, Job Broughton was born on October 30, 1755 in Brunswick Co., VA; he married your GGG-grandma, Mary [Lewis or Woodward?],(b. March 10, 1756) on June 20, 1774 ; he died March 27, 1837 in Hammond, Knox Co., KY. Mary also remianed there until she passed away in 1845, at the age of 89.
Job Broughton was a Revolutionary War vet, serving between 1775 and 1776.Job and Mary were living in Surry Co., NC when Job fought the Tories in the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge, on February 27, 1776.Exactly one year later, they moved to Wilkes Co., GA.Now in Georgia, Job re-entered the service and was stationed at Stephen Herd's Fort in 1777, serving until 1781. During the four-year period, he served as a Minuteman and was also a spy for about 18 months before participating in the seige of Savannah.
Job later moved his family to Buncombe Co., NC, where he owned land on Choats Creek. In 1808, they moved north to Knox Co., KY with the other Broughtons, Davises and Woodwards.
Job's parents were Willoughby Broughton (b. 1725 in VA) & Elizabeth Christman. They married ca. 1748 in VA. He died October/November 1804 in Anderson Co., SC.
This is somewhat speculative but it fits ......
Willoughby Broughton was the son of James Broughton & ???; James was the son of Symond Broughton & Anise Chamberlaine.
