I don't think it was just the census that used the initials. It was really popular for the people to go by them. It really causes a mess when searching on the internet. I kept looking for a William everywhere and found that it was W.E. and also a Thomas that was listed as T W. and a Sharman that came up on the internet as Tharman.
My mother has thought that Winston was William for years but our search has ended there with that leg of the search.
My side of the family did move back and forth into TN and MS the state line being so close to the area.
I'll look at my records and see if I can determine any thing else.
