My ancestor was probably a Brosseau - he was born 3 Aug 1813/1827 around St. Albans, Vermont, although Quebec is a strong possibility. I am trying to identify his parents. Sirell served in the US Civil War as a private in the 8th Vermont Infantry (St. Albans Company) and reenlisted in March 1865 in Burlington in Hancock's First Army Corps, where he gave his residence as Georgia, Vermont. I have traced him from there to Danielson and New Britain Connecticut, and then to Cohoes NY in 1871 where his name changed to Alexander S. Brewster. He moved to Albany NY in 1877 and was employed as a carpenter until 1893 when he entered the Soldier's Home in Bennington, Vermont using his original Brusseau name. When applying for admission to the Veteran's Home he signed an affidavit stating that he also served in the US Navy under Commodore Biddle from 1844-48.
His wife was from Scotland (Agnes, b. 1832). I have been unable to locate records of his marriage (around 1853) or the births of his children - Silas (b. 13 July 1854), Agnes (b. 25 Oct 1856) and John (b. 28 Oct 1858). John Brewster was baptized as an adult in Albany prior to his marriage in the Catholic Church and gave his middle name as Theodore (a rather uncommon name). I have not found Sirell Brusseau in the 1860 US Census or earlier, and suspect that he may have been living in Quebec.
I have found a Theodore Brosseau in St. Albans in the 1850 US Census and in St. Albans RC parish records. I have found a Quebec connection to St. Georges in Henryville in 1845, as Theodore Brosseau was godfather to Pierre Brosseau (who was born to Paul Brosseau and Louise Duvernais). The same parish registers also show that Theodore Brosseau (L'Acadie) was a witness to the death of Pierre Fandif in 1844. Earlier marriage records from St. Jean (L"Acadie) show that Marie Brosseau and Paul Phaneuf were married on 22 Nov 1802 and that Pierre Brosseau married Sophis Phaneuf on 11 Feb 1822. Does anyone have information on these Brosseau lines? Any suggestions on how to find Sirell?
