Thanks for the replies, Ralph. I do sometimes use the Irish Family History Foundation records but find it very expensive and to be honest very poor value compared to almost any other genealogy paysite.

It is set up so that almost any five-euro-a-pop enquiry is a fishing expedition. For instance if you know the surnames of two people who got married, it should be easy to search for only marriages of those two names together. Instead one has to fish for each individually and hope to get lucky, usually getting the record of someone totally unrelated for a fiver. If they ever get around to either having a flat rate for membership or a more comprehensive search mechanism, I and many others will beat a path to their door, but until then the pain to gain ratio is not for me.

On a cheerier note, I at least found the right names for my great grandparents from census sources. They were Michael Brophy of Carlow and Dublin and Elizabeth Farrell of Naas, married around 1877, probably in Carlow.

Best regards,

Brendan
