Edwin Ralph Broome passed his Chief Mate's certificate in 1897 and married Mabel Amy Baster in 1898. She died in childbirth later that year. He died in 1902 when Mount Pelee on Martinique erupted. Was Edwin an officer on the British steamship Roddam which was in the harbour at the time of the eruption?
Edwin and Mabel's son was born October 1898, was also named Edwin Ralph Broome, and was raised by the Broome family.
Edwin who died 1902 may be the same Edwin Broome who appears on the 1881 Census for 1 Lime Terrace, Charlton Next Woolwich, Kent. Head of house: Richard L Broome 47 years a Plumber born Swanscombe, Kent and Jemima 41 years born Iver, Buckingham. Edwin is shown then as aged 17 a Mathematical Instrument Maker born Charlton, Kent with a brother Christopher aged 12 years.
