If I don't get it right this time I am in real trouble because I had four great-great uncles who were in Co. F, Cobb's Georgia Legion (Infantry) and one great grandfather in the 13th Regiment, Georgia Voluteer Infantry.
First, the John BROOME who was in Co. G, 13 Regiment Georgia Infantry. He died 8 AUG 1862 at Staunton, VA. and is buried at Thornrose Cemetery. I don't have his Compiled Service Record so I don't know if he was wounded at Malvern Hill or died of disease. He enlisted in Early County and kinship to John T. BROOME of Carroll Co. is unlikely.
Now to your ancestor:
John T. BROOM enlisted at Carrollton, GA 15 Aug 1861 as a Private in Co. F, Cobb's Georgia Legion (Infantry). He was promoted to Sgt. He was killed at Crampton's Gap, MD on 14 Sep 1862. No burial place is given on the compiled service record.
That is an abstract of the Compiled Service Record.
Cobb's Georgia Legion (Infantry) was under the command of Maj. Gen. L. McLAW at the seige and capture of Harper's Ferry, VA. McLAW's forces were north of Harper's Ferry in Maryland trying to prevent Union forces from coming through Crompton's Gap and relieving the garrison at Harper's Ferry. There was heavy fighting there on the 14th of September. Meanwhile, there were several Confederate divisions on the south side in Virginia attacking the Union forces from the south. The major player was the division under the command of General A. P. HILL, but supporting him was the division of General Ewell, to which the 13th Georgia Regiment was attached. After the capture of Harper's Ferry by the Confederate forces on the 15th, both armies moved northwest and had a battle at a place called Antietam on the 16th and 17th of September.
