The following was copied from the Will of James Broom (Old Barnwell, South Carolina). James was the son of John Broom of the old Barnwell District. There may be some minor errors. submitted by: ToolzRus96@aol.com In the name of God Amen. I James Broom in feeble condition but in my right mind do make and constitute this to be my last Will and Testament. It is my will and desire that my plantation houses and lands stock of all kinds tools house wares and kitchen furniture be and remain in the possession of my beloved wife Elizabeth Broom during her natural life to be managed as may be thought best by her and my sons for the use and benefit of her and all my children whose names are Thomas V. Broom, Candace Broom, John Broom, Reuben Broom, James Broom Jr., and Mary J.F. Broom. It is also my desire that money due me by Myers and Roundtree be collected by my wife and sons and that my just debts be paid, and when the rest of the timber is cut that the money be collected by my wife and sons and if enough that a negro girl or woman be bought for the use and benefit of my wife and family, as my wife Mary wishes as long as she lives. It is my desire that all things shall be managed as above as stated and as may be thought best by heirs for the benefit of them as though I was living as long as my wife lives. It is my desire that after the death of my beloved wife that there be a division of all that I have so as to give each of my children an equal portion share and share alike. It will be decided by a majority of them whether they will sell or divide ??? ???. if the lands be sold the minors if any shall all have a ???? for wood and garden in the said lands until the money is all paid to get them a home, or one is ??? ??? ??? for them. It is my desire that my sons or two or all as may suit them, have the management of the whole for the benefits of all the heirs and my sons should die so there is none to act my daughters shall act for themselves or choose some one to transact the business for them.
