BROOME Families in AL, MS 1840s-1900s

I am trying to find where my gggrandfather came from. His tombstone reads "E. E. BROOME, b. April 15, 1833, d. October 30, 1872." Other family members have provided information indicating that "E.E." stood for "Elias Emanuel," and his son's tombstone reads "Emanuel E. BROOME, b. Feb. 3, 1864, d. Jan. 24, 1906," I I believe Emanuel is one of the names, and a transcription of a family bible record indicates his name was "Elias Broome," so I'm pretty sure I'm looking for "Elias Emanuel BROOME."

Now, in 1850, his wife-to-be, Eliza FORD is enumerated with her birth family in Pushmataha, Choctaw Co., AL. In 1860, she and Elias are enumerated there as well, with their first two children, Jesse and Ann.

I cannot find Elias ANYWHERE before 1860. I have searched Broomes, Brooms and Browns in and around AL and MS and a few scattered other places as well, but "E.E." is nowhere to be found in 1850, so I have NO idea who his family is. He just arrives from nowhere.

There are several BROOMES that are granted land around 1837 in Sumter, Choctaw and Marengo Counties in AL, including Curran J. BROOME (who, I think is a female), Darcus BROOME (who I believe is also a female), James C. BROOME, Marscella S. BROOME and Thomas W. BROOME. Unfortunately, NONE of these lovely folks end up in the Sumter, Marengo or Choctaw Co. censuses that I can find in 1840 or 1850. I expect they are there, but I have not been able to find a one.

I am wondering if anyone knows anything about these particular families, as this is the most likely family from whence "my" Elias might have descended.

Thanks for listening.

Barbara L. Hamrick
