If you learn anything I hope you will contact me. James E. Martin was my gg-grandfather. I am not 100% he is the James E. Martin that married Frances Broome Powell but after eliminating all other known James Martins of Decatur County, GA, I don't see how it could be any other.

I had thought that all the on line transcriptions of the marriage date must have been wrong but on Wednesday of this week, I found and made a copy of their marriage records at Georgia Archives and they were, indeed, married in June of 1867.

I could not find Frances (or Francis as on marriage redords) on any 1870 census but on 1880 census Jimmie Laura Martin is listed as her daughter, age 14. I also found cemetery records on microfilm at Georgia Archives. Jimmie Laura Martin Powell (she married M. D. Powell from NC who settled in Bainbridge) shows her birth year as 1864.

If that date is correct then it seems to me unlikely that Jimmie Laura Martin was Francis Broome Powell Martin's child . Have you ever heard if Francis adopted her. It seems to me that had she been the daughter of James' first wife, Mary Miller Martin that one of his older children would have taken her in and raised her? Was she Needham Powell's child and was she adopted by James? Or was she an out of wedlock child that he acknowledged as his own and gave his name?

I'm sure that the reason Francis wasn't counted in 1870 census was because of being so recently widowed. She probably was between homes in Washington County, FL and Decatur County, FL. James E. Martin appears to have moved to Washington County, FL sometime around 1835. He died in March of 1870 in a boating accident in the Gulf of Mexico.

Just curious.
