I've studied the Broom and McBroom surname in some detail, and where your Judge John Broom is concerned, I believe he was born in what is now Franklin County, Tennessee which borders Alabama, however, I could be wrong, (emphasis on the last point).

This location would fit nicely with the dates of birth of Miles' children who were born very shortly after this area was opened for settlement. Also, Andrew Jackson's militia was made up mostly of Tennesseans. The "Old Dominion" aspect having to do with the Judge being born near the Boiling Fork of the Elk River, appears to me, to be a key element of a family story that belongs to an earlier time and place as regards his ancestors.

The waters of the Boiling Fork that I have previously referred to run westward from Sewanee to Cowan, and then to Winchester where it feeds into Tims Ford Lake. Prior to the establishment of the lake, the confluence of Boiling Fork with the Elk River, as I see it, would have been about two miles west of Winchester, which is where the Elk River takes a decidedly northern run up towards Wood's Reservoir.
