Note:It is my opinion that Bailey M. Brooks Christian name was Balaam May Brooks, named for Balaam Brooks born in 1782 – Georgia.I think that Bailey was a nickname. But it is the name recorded in Joseph C. Brooks Family Bible Record.
The first Balaam Brooks was probably the son of Jacob Brooks who came of age in Georgia in 1782 (Georgia Militia) and died about 1786 in Georgia. The first Balaam Brooks was thought to be the son of John Brooks, Jr. and Jane May by Ida Kellum Brooks. There is strong evidence that John Brooks, Jr. died about 1775 in North Carolina which would make Balaam Brooks unlikely to be his son.The fact that Jane May Brooks deeded land to Balaam Brooks is evidence that there was a very strong family relationship. It is my opinion that she raised Balaam Brooks upon the death of his father and probably his mother.
In addition, almost all of the sons of John Brooks, Jr. and Jane May have named sons Balaam May or some variation thereof.Jane May had a brother, Balaam May and that strengthens the evidence for the name Balaam.
