In a book written by R.T. Brooks:
The origin of the name "Brooks" is ascribed to one Ralph Brook, a York herald, who in the year 1596 lived near the mouth of a stream in Old England and took upon himself the name of Brooksmouth. He later decided to change it to a more dignified form of Brooks, with variations of Brook and Brooke adopted by some branches of the family it has remained ever since.
