Have you read the interesting 8-page Confederate pension application on Ancestry.com (and Georgia Virtual Vault site) for your J. B. Brooks of Gordon Co., Ga.?
There are two (or more) Jesses in my extended (by DNA) Brooks family. One is Jesse B. Brooks, born abt. 1786 in NC (maybe Pitt or Anson Co.??).He moved from Anson Co., NC, to Spartanburg. Co., SC, c. 1831.A descendant thinks his middle name might be Bradford.
Our other Jesse (Jesse C.) was born c. 1822 in Georgia, and was the son of Abraham Brooks, born c. 1795 in NC (prob. Anson or Pitt Co.).Abraham was in Jones Co., Ga., by January of 1817.
I found it interesting that your Jesse B. Brooks was in Co. C, 39th Regt., North Carolina Volunteers, apparently the same company as an Abram A. (Adam?) Brooks.Do you know anything about him?It appears that Abram/Adam was young enough to be Jesse's son, but could be unrelated.

The Cherokee Co. NC web site said this:
39th North Carolina Troops-Company C
BROOKS Adam Private Dec 14, 1861 Resided in Cherokee County. Enlisted at age 16 in Buncombe County. Transferred to Co G Feb 19, 1862.
BROOKS Jesse B Private Sep 28, 1861 Enlisted at age 50. Discharged Nov 10, 1862. Reason not given.
A Google book, Roster of North Carolina troops in the War Between the States, Volume 3, by North Carolina General Assembly, said this:
Brooks, Jesse B. enlisted October 22, '61; Cherokee Co.; discharged May 22, '62 in NC
Brooks, Abram A. enlisted Nov. 4th, '61; Cherokee Co.; transferred to Com. G Feb. 19th, '62
Co. G listing says "Brooks, Abram A., enlisted Dec. 14, '62 ['61?]; Cherokee Co.; discharged Nov. '62; re-enlisted Sept 24, '63; dt."
If you're interested in y-DNA testing, you need a male descendant of Jesse named BROOKS.
