Christine

Here's hoping you've spoken w/ your uncle about taking the DNA test to help you link into your correct line of Brooks. I host the Brooks DNA group for Family Tree DNA. Currently they are offering a special 37-marker testing for $119 thru the end of July. Of course, the sooner you got your uncle to test, the sooner we'd know if you were in my line of R1a Brooks which has just been proven back to Matthew Brooks 1711 VA who married Elizabeth Warren d/o Thomas Warren. This was very exciting news to us as this is exactly what we have expected.

Some others in our group rec'd somewhat disheartening news. They, too, had VA and SC Brooks ties and proved to be R1b1.

Sometimes, years and years of painstakingly hard labor proves to be incorrect since the DNA does not lie. Labs could probably make mistakes, but overall, they'd have to make many mistakes since the dna is tested at 12 markers, then 25 markers, 37 markers, or 67 markers. In short, the more markers they test for, the more confirmed your line becomes.

Our R1a group is small - only 10 - 12 people have tested. Our most recent addition was a HUGE help in proving what we've suspected all along. However, we still have a missing generation or two.

We know that our Cocke Co, TN Brooks first arrived about 1820 something, coming from SC - Edgefield, Newberry, Anderson(maybe).
The 1830 Cocke Co, TN census lists the following Brooks:
Samuel born 1751-1760
M. Csill born 1781-1790
Samuel Jr. born 1801-1810
Joel born 1771-1780
William 1771-1780 (later census showed him to be b 1781 NC)

Of these, only William is listed in the 1840 and 1850 census, with new Brooks families appearing in 1840.
George (1804 SC) and Warren (1811 SC) - Exact matches on 37 marker DNA tests - most assuredly brothers as they lived next to each other and named their children very similar names. Mariah, most likely a sister, b 1817 SC, lived next door also and married Charles Stephens.

The one which may help to tie to your Anderson Brooks (1820 NC) is Wright Brooks b 1814 SC. He named a son Anderson b 1856 Cocke Co, TN. Is it possible that Wright Brooks b 1814 SC could be the brother or cousin of your Anderson Brooks b 1820 NC? This is what DNA testing would help to determine. And, you know what they say about price - "you get what you pay for." Ancestry.com and several others also DNA test, but the data base for comparison purposes is larger at Family Tree DNA. That's why we went with them. The markers tested are different from lab to lab and so having a larger group with which to compare offers the better chance of connecting the dots and breaking thru brick walls.

I hope you'll be able to convince your uncle to test. These tests must be done on males who carry the family name. Once a line produces no more males, there will be no way except a paper trail to tie them to their ancestors.

Please let me know what you find out on your line. You would be welcome to join us at BrooksFamilyDNA@yahoogroups.com since you are actively researching and have a proven paper-trail back at least 4 generations.
