Notes for ZACHARIAH SMITH BROOKS, COL.:
1781-1782
His pension paper says; "Zachariah Smith Brooks enlisted in Newberry District, S.C., shortly after the evacuation of Cambridge by Gen. Greene, and served six months as a private in Capt. John Wallace's Company of S. C. Troops, and was in several skirmishes with the Tories. He served in 1781 and 1782 in Capt. Joseph Towles, company, Col. Samuel Hammond's S.C. regiment, was in a skirmish on the Edisto River, and was stationed about six weeks on the frontier guarding the incursions of the Indians, also during his service he was enlisted as one of a corps called the Life Guard of Pickens, length of service, six months." He was afterwards appointed Col. of State Calvary, and as always known as Col. Brooks.

It seems very evident that Elizabeth (Smith) Brooks died when Zachariah Smith Brooks was an infant, and James Brooks, m. 2nd in Chatham County, N.C., and they were the parents of Simon Brooks as shown in the will of her father. Margaret seems to have been the mother of twin sons, Jacob and Esaw, as the name Simon is found often among descendants. Jacob and Esaw were born about 1769 and Margaret (Thomasson) Brooks died between 1788 and 1793.
