Kirk,If you want to know the reason many people left N. Carolina around that time, you ought to read the book Hornet's Nest by Jimmy Carter.
It is unbelievable the way the Crown King George, through his appointed govenor a Mr. Wright treated the settlers in the upper North West counties of NC.They tried to make them sign an oath to the King, They took their lands that they were granted stating that there was no legal stamp (from the infamous Stamp Act) a tax imposed on the colonist for any legal documents, and when the settlers tried to band together and send a letter to the govenor stating their grevances the govenor sicked the British troops on them shooting into the gathering and taking some inocent citizens prisoner, taking them to the court and hanging them.
Your Thomas of 1784, which county is he from. There is a lot of work done on Pierson Co NC that has the name Thomas Brooks in it about that time.My Brooks went to Claiborne Co Tenn migrating from Prince Edward Co. Virginia. His name was Bartholomew Brooks b.1763, and his father is beleived to be Thomas Brooks (Thomas was his surety for Bartholomew's wedding to Sussanah Smith). It is speculated that Thomas was born abt 1720-30and some of his descendents went to NC and some to TENN.
Another common reason the settlers moved West was for more land.If a family had a lot of sons, it was common to leave the farm to the first born so the other sons sought land grants to the west.
