1. John Brooks came from Virginia to Cross Creek (now Fayetteville, N.C.) early in the 18th century. In the family with the old man, John, were his six sons, Isaac, Joab, James, Mark (or Marcus), John Jr., and a sixth not known to the writer. In the year 1735, the Register of Deeds office at Fayetteville, N.C. locates John Brooks and his six sons in Bladen County, N.C., about 100 miles southeast from Greensboro, N.C. From the courthouse records and various transfers of land, these older Brooks seem to have been well endowed with land and slaves.

About the year 1736, John Brooks moved with his family from the Fayetteville section and located in Chatham County, N.C. about 50 miles south of Greensboro near a rail road station and post office by the name of Ore Hill, N.C. They secured a large tract of land on which they built their home, a two-story frame building which was considered very fine for that day and time. This house, which was built about the year 1756 or 1757 and is still standing and in good shape (1930), has never been out of the Brooks family.

General Greene's army camped one night at the old Brooks' place when pursuing Lord Cornwallis after the battle of Guilford Court House. Col. William Washington is said to have occupied one of the upper rooms.

At least two of John's sons were Revolutionary soldiers, Isaac and James. Isaac was in the battle of Alamance and later served as a member of the General Assembly of North Carolina for many years. James served in the South Carolina militia as a private under Colonel Anderson.

John Brooks and his wife (name unknown) had at least five sons: ?

2. Isaac, m. Ruth Terrell; d. 1810 or 1812
3. Joab
4. James, b. 1725; m. Margaret Thomason, d. 1800
5. Mark (or Marcus)
6. John, Jr.

4. James (John') was born in North Carolina in 1725. He married Margaret Thomason (Tommasson, Tommasin, Tommison), daughter of Simom Tomison of Chatham County, N. C. It is not known when he left North Carolina for South Carolina but he is listed in the 1790 census as living in Newberry County, S.C.

Have info for 52 decendants and Plat of Brooks Family Cemetery , Raleigh Ga. that I will share.
