Hello Daniel,
I also descend from John and Martha Brooks of Augusta Co. VA.I am still in the early stages of learning about them and their children, and I would like to compare notes with you about the family.I have a few questions / comments:
1. Where did you get Martha's maiden name?Did you find a marriage record in Richmond Co?If so, what is the marriage date?I only had her name from John's will.By the way, John's death date is actually 1795 -- he signed his will on 9/13/1790, but it wasn't probated until August court 1795.
2. I believe he had 5 sons, not 4.The one you left out was Jonathan, who was a different person than his brother John. Both sons are listed in different paragraphs in the will, both getting their own 12 shillings.Weird to have both a John and a Jonathan. It reminds me of George Foreman naming all of his sons George.
3. Where did you get the birth date of c1760?I have thought John was much older than that.I descend from his son John's son Moses Brooks who was born in 1760.I don't think the elder John could have been born much later than 1715.Maybe we're dealing with two different John Brooks here.
4. Where do you get his origins as PA and then Richmond Co. VA?The only reference I've seen to his origin is when he bought 430 acres on 7/7/1778.It says he was living in"Bartly Co. VA" which seems to have not been a real county, but is nevertheless found in some of the early Augusta Co. records.I've tried to find some information about what real county this refers to, but have failed to do so.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Bruce
