Jean,
I am researching our Brooks line back to Benjamin Brooks in Highland County, ohio and have been doing so for 20 years.
In the "Highland Pioneer Sketches and Family Genealogies" on file at the LDS Library in Salt Lake City (Page 706) there is a one page story on this family. Facts in this article state they lefft Pennsylvania in Spring of 1800, Benjamin Brooks (Sr) was accompanied by his wife, three sons --James, Benjamin, Jr and Thomas (all named in the article)-- and several daughters. They floated down the Ohio River to the mouth of the Scioto....They came to Higland Co in the summer of 1802.They located their land grant for services in the Revolution (Bounty Land Warrant # 11892)on a tributary of Fall Creek called Grassy Run. (Benjamin Sr and son, James, are supposed to be buried on Grassy Run Farm...but no tombstones have been found.
James is a direct descendant of Robert de la Brooke mentioned in the early records of England, as coming to America soon after 1600."
Benjamin Brooks served in the Revolutionary War with Capt. Springer's Company in the Virgina Contential Line.He served upwards to 3 years.
On page 235 of the same above mentioned book.It states that Benjamin Brooks of Highland County was a brother of Wm Brooks who, as a ferry-boat operator, made history along the Ohio River.John and Thomas Brooks, as well as other members of the family, lived at Bryant's Station in Kentucky, when it was under attack by the Indians.Thomas Brooks married Sarah Boone. Wm had a daughter, Sabrina who married Jessie Ellis...."
Thomas Brooks was born in Farqier county, Virginia. So I'm assuming that Benjamin was as well, but no documentation and no real proof that Thomas and Benjamin (Sr) were brothers.
Benjamin (Sr) will was probated in Highland County, Ohio 8 Jun 1809.I have a list of the children of Benjamin and Nancy Brooks.
Our line descends from Benjamin Brooks, Jr. s/o Benjamin and Nancy Brooks.
Stephen A Brooks s/o Benjamin (Jr) and (wife ?) Brooks(b. Ohio, moved to Indiana and then Iowa -- he was a Circuit Riding Methodist minister)
James E.Brooks s/o of Stephen and Mary Elizabeth (Mitchell) Brooks
George Frederick Brooks s/o James and Catherine Ann (Cunningham) Brooks
Howard Wilson Brooks s/o George Frederick and Maude Ida Brooks
My husband, son of Howard Wilson and Julia Juanita (Jennings) Brooks
Tell me what information you have and/or need on Benjamin Brooks.I live in Iowa and would love to know who from your line ended up in this state.Would be happy to do some local research, if needed.
Ellie Brooks
