Having inquired at length about my ancestor, I now have much better information about him and am hoping it well help some Brooke reseracher in identifying him. Rev. George Gibson Brooke married Eliza Jane Smith in 1835 in Greenbrier Co., Va. (now W.Va.) He was commissioned during the Civil War as a Chaplain under Gen. Imboden, putting him in the Shenandoah Valley area. Rev. Brooke was a Methodist. Eliza Jane Smith is the daughter of Congressman Ballard Smith who represented Hannover Co. and other areas in the U.S. House from 1815-1821. Eliza's mother is Mary "Polly" Gray Davis, who is related on the Davis side to the family of Jefferson Davis. On her mother's side she is the daughter of Jane Clendennin, survivor of the 1763 Clendennin massacre in Greenbrier Co. I don't know where George Gibson Brooke lived or was born but some this evidence points to Greenbrier Co. and family tradition mentions Lewisburg. Can anyone help me with connecting him to Brookes in this area of Virginia? He may be related to the Gibsons of Hannover and Louisa counties on one side of his family, though this is far from certain. Again, any help appreciated. -- Frank Taylor
