Colin,

Call me Ichabod. You say truly when you speak of the search for roots as never ending...and that quest can be addictive ("Pandoras box" may be pushing the envelope; certainly ancestor worship has generated a lot of silliness but I would hardly call it the snake in the garden)...but anyhow, somewhere between the triple coronary bypass and renewed contact with the love of my life, the glory departed. I haven't done any genealogical research since the summer of 2002. In the matter of Brokaw origins, I doubt that it will be possible to go back much farther than Bourgon's father, Louis. At this point I think knowledge of the historical and geographical context from which the family emerged is more important than the names of individual ancestors...if someone would actually take the trouble to do some genuine research in Europe there might be dividends...but to rely on the internet alone is mental masturbation of a not very satisfying kind.

Good luck in your graduate pursuits,

Russ
