Hi Duncan. I too must apologise for not getting straight back to you but hubby is in the last year of his OU degree and therefore hogs the computer.

I also cannot find anything other than the Census records for Great Granddad Lewis. The mothers use of a maiden name is not unusual as apparently woman in Scotland did not take their husbands name on marriage until late 19th early 20th century. As you say if his father was a seafarer he was possibly at sea during the Censuses and we may never find him.

It would be nice to hear from you other than posts to the forum. If you are willing please email me direct.
