RUTH DEWAN BROCKWAY 1924-2008 Ruth went home to the Lord Friday, March 28, 2008, after an extended illness. She was born August 15, 1924, to Agnes Aya Depew and Frederick Michael Dewan in Center Island , Ontario , the seventh of nine children. She grew up in Beverly Hills , graduating from Beverly Hills High School in 1943. Eager to serve her country in a time of War, Ruth enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and worked as an administrative assistant in Washington DC . Shortly after the War she returned to California where she fell in love with another veteran, Richard Thomas 'Tom' Brockway, marrying him October 30, 1948. Together they raised a family of one girl and six boys. Ruth and Tom considered family as their most precious blessing in life. In 1958 they settled in Arroyo Grande where she supported her husband's career as an executive with the Lockheed Corporation and many community services, including the development of Marian Hospital , Rotary, Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Maria, among others. After raising their children, Ruth started her own career in real estate, eventually owning her own business as a licensed broker. Central to Ruth's life was her Catholic faith, attending daily Mass and stressing the importance of a Christian life and education to her children and grandchildren. Ruth is survived by her seven children: Kathleen Brockway Tognazzini and husband Richard of Santa Maria, Michael Thomas Brockway of Sunnyvale, Christopher Dewan Brockway and wife Ann of Sparks NV, Dennis Patrick Brockway and wife Mavi Ann of Yorba Linda, Richard Thomas Brockway II of Sacramento, David Gerard Brockway and wife Jamie of Sacramento, and Scott Damien Brockway and wife Leah of Spokane WA. She is also survived by one sister Agnes Dewan Donahue of Downey, thirteen grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.. Ruth is preceded in death by her husband of 41 years Tom and by her second husband Anton 'Tony' Eiler, with whom she was blessed with 10 more years of happiness. A Vigil Service will be held at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Pismo Beach on Friday, April 4, 2008 at 7:00 PM. The Funeral Mass will held at the same location on Saturday, April 5 at 1:00 PM. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, friends consider donations to the parish of St. Paul in Pismo Beach or St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Arroyo Grande.
