Properties passing into Earl Cowper's possession through family inheritance included the Wrest Park Estate in Bedfordshire (formerly belonging to the de Grey family), the Melbourne Hall Estate in Derbyshire and Brocket Hall Estate in Hertfordshire (formerly belonging to the Lamb family, Viscounts Melbourne).
He is reported to have inherited it from his grandmother.
