In the "Records of Men Enlisted in the U.S. Army Prior to the Peace Establishment, May 17, 1815" for Hayden Brock, No. 2313, Ancestry.com shows Hayden's age at enlistment (28 Sep. 1812) as 26, which would yield a birth year of 1786. The document shows that Hayden was discharged 22 Sep 1817 with the rank of Sergeant Major, after a five-year enlistment. Given that the document summarizes his entire military record and refers to his pension case, I believe the age of 26 shown on the document must be his age at discharge, not his age at enlistment, which would yield a birth year of 1791, the accepted year for his birth. Frankly, I would like to establish Hayden's birth year as 1786, which is the accepted year for William, so that we could conjecture that William was born in some other (and perhaps, later) year, but I do not believe this enlistment record supports such a conclusion. To the contrary, it supports the status quo.
